I miss posting. Writing. I should do it more. Anyways.

Randomly, some things I wanted to save from a thread calling for stupid questions that you're too afraid to ask in case you get laughed at, because they're interesting or funny.

"Does poop have calories?" (horatio_jr)
  1. You shouldn't eat it regardless. (Illneverforgetthis)
  2. Yes, your digestive system doesn't absorb everything you eat. It's not 100% efficient. Some diet tablets work by reducing the efficiency of the absorption. (Kaos_pro)

"Wtf is this about the birds and the bees and what does it have to do with sex?" (zaphod_beetle_bro)
  1. Wiki's claim on the subject: According to tradition, the birds and the bees is a metaphorical story sometimes told to children in an attempt to explain the mechanics and good consequences of sexual intercourse through reference to easily observed natural events. For instance, bees carry and deposit pollen into flowers, a visible and easy-to-explain example of male fertilisation. Another example, birds lay eggs, a similarly visible and easy-to-explain example of female ovulation. (StrictScrutiny)

"If the entire world is in debt, where did all the money go?" (hungryhungrypotato)
  1. In this exemplary world of ours there's only 4 people. The world bank, a local bank, person A and perosn B. The world bank prints a piece of paper and they call that piece of paper $100. person A wants to build some furniture so he asks the bank for a loan. They give him the $100 under the condition that he'll pay them back $110 next year.
Person A now needs to 'create' $10 from somewhere or else he won't be able to repay the bank. This creates an incentive for him to be productive. person A goes to person B and buy some wood from him. person B charges him $100 for that. person A now uses the wood and his own time to build a bed out of the wood he bought. he values this bed at $150. If we examine this world now we'll see that there's $150 of product in it, $110 of debt and $100 in currency.
You can continue to play with this example: person B could take up a loan of $150 (the money for which needs to be printed first) and then pay person A with that to buy the bed but from what I understand about currency and depth this is the core here: Over time the total debt in a system will increase. Debt is an incentive to increase the value of the things you have and the things you can get (by paying for them). (Musclewizard)

"What is the purpose of a middle name?" (aryasneedle42)
  1. To distinguish between dinner time and being in trouble for something. (stevestloo)
  2. Typically in my country middle name is father's first name so "your name father's name last name " shows you are son of your father who's is of family last name. For example a typical name format is "Bender Benito Rodriguez", it means Bender the son of Benito, who is of family Rodriguez. Its common in India. Also seems to be common in Russia, Ukrain and Iceland.

"How do Muslim women stay cool? It was about 90 degrees outside yesterday and I saw a woman wearing an al-amira. I felt like she was going to get heat stroke." (-monkeyslut)
  1. Contrary to popular belief, being completely covered in loose-fitting, black clothing, is better to keep yourself cool in the heat than shorts/tank-tops/short sleeves/white colors. The completely covered thing is because your exposed skin is being directly heated by the sun, so covering it will protect it from that.
The black clothing is because of what most people don't realize: Yes, white clothing will reflect the sun's heat while the black absorbs it, but it's doing the same to your own body heat. White clothes reflect your body heat right back to you, so you end up not being able to lose that heat. When the black clothing absorbs it, it's no longer being fed right back to you.
One caveat in this, though, is that the black clothing then needs a way to convect the heat away from you. Even a light breeze (7 mph or 3 m/s) is enough to do a fantastic job at this. In dead air, the black will just be holding the heat right next to you, so it's about the same as having white clothing reflect it back to your skin. So at the end of the day, in the heat, it's probably better to wear loose-fitting black just in case there's a breeze to help carry the heat away from you.
TL;DR - Their full covering black fabric is actually better at keeping them cool in the heat than most of the "normal" summer clothes that you see.
    Source[1]
Edit: Reading through that article again, it seems that I made a small error. In dead air, loose-fitting white is marginally better than loose-fitting black. I would still say that it's better to wear black since it's almost never a completely windless day, but if you know for sure that it will be, go ahead and wear white.
Edit 2: This Time It's Not Edit 1: Apparently, the source I linked has it wrong as far as colors absorbing or reflecting body heat. I still argue that the conclusion of the source (loose, black clothing being generally better than white) is correct, but the mechanism by which it works is different than what the person writing the article assumed.

"We fill our bike and car tires with pressurized air. Would there be any notable difference if we filled them with a different gas? What if we filled a bike's tires with water? How might that affect the shock absorption and the way the bike handles on the road?" (Cedarwolf)
  1. Air is ~80% nitrogen and ~20% oxygen. Studies have shown it is better to put 100% nitrogen in tires to reduce corrosion and pressure changes. (mwatwe01)

"Why do some hairs come out thicker than others? When you pluck them, sometimes they have a little sheath around them. What is all of that? Sebaceous fluid?" (Cedarwolf)
  1. The "sheath" is actually the follicle 'bulb' you are pulling out. Sure, there's sebum (oil) and all that good stuff is on there, but that clearish sheath at the end is that bulb. When a hair is plucked, that is normally what comes out with it, and why plucking takes longer than shaving for the hair to come back, as that bulb has to regrow, then the hair can regrow (as the bulb helps supply nutrients).
As for why hair can be thicker in diameter, for example, even between two hairs on your head, is because hairs can have different thickness/coarseness between each other. (cantstandcrazies)
